Houston woke up to scenes of destruction on after severe storms with winds of up to 100 mph spewed debris across roads, and littered the ground downtown with broken glass. Officials confirmed that four people died in the storm.

There were more than 650,000 homes and businesses without power in Houston’s Harris County early Friday, the majority of the nearly 800,000 without it across Texas. Another 150,000 in Louisiana were also without power

"We're in recovery mode," Houston Mayor John Whitmire said.

Hundreds of thousands of people could be left without reliable cooling options for days as temperatures soar into the 90s this weekend and beyond. Houston’s power provider warned residents to “be prepared for extended weather-related power outages” and the National Weather Service in Houston said outages “could extend for multiple days” because of “some of the damage to power/transmission lines.”

In a news conference on Thursday evening, Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said two of the deaths were caused by falling trees, while a third person died in a crane accident.

HOUSTON - A line of severe thunderstorms swept through southeastern Texas and Louisiana on Thursday, blasting the Houston area with ferocious winds that left at least four dead - including a mother of a newborn - and more than 1 million power customers without electricity.
